MLB! It's time to do something!
Last night I was laying down about to go to bed, scrolling, and the news of Kyle Tucker signing came across my phone. In my mind I was like "HOW?!", "WHAT?!?!", and every other confused expression. How can one team pay the players like they are paying them? I know as a kid I asked this same question and said the same thing about the Yankees. I guess it didn't hit me as much because the numbers weren't as big.
The Dodgers over the past few seasons have been basically the "lock" to get the top free agents every off season. You know how Olive Garden has "Never Ending Salad"? Well the Dodgers have "Never Ending Pockets" and it isn't fair. I saw a meme last night after the Tucker deal was announced and the numbers were out. It showed that between 5 players (Ohtani, Betts, Yamamoto, Tucker, and Snell) the Dodgers are paying over 1.8 BILLION dollars. Shohei takes up 700 of that million but 5 PLAYERS AT ALMOST 2 BILLION DOLLARS!! I understand the point people may say "oh they defer so much" and blah blah blah. But HOLY CRAP!! Enough is enough.
My next thought was "Is Kyle Tucker really a 60 million dollar a year guy?". He put up good numbers in Houston, enough to get some MVP votes in 2023 finishing 5th in voting. In 2024, he only played about half the season due to injury and hit 29 HR with a .289 average. Then in 2025 he played his first season in the NL with the Cubs. He dropped down to 23 HR for the year with an average of .266. I get it, he is probably a 30 HR guy that can steal a few bases with a decent average. But HOLY CRAP!! SIXTY MILLION DOLLARS????
Then this morning I was reading and they are also in on Bo Bichette. From what I have read, Bichette is hoping for 300–400-million-dollar deal depending on the length. How can they do this? This needs to stop.
Looking at payroll numbers from 2025, they are at $549M. That is $149M more than the second highest team. They are paying a luxury tax of $150M!! That more than doubles the second highest and triples the third highest.
MLB it is time to step in. I'm not a salary cap guy, I like teams to have some freedom. But this.... this is ridiculous! Make it fair. You can't have teams paying certain players an AAV that is almost the same as some entire team payrolls.
